IMRAM CEOIL - LIAM Ó MAONLAÍ WITH STEVE COONEY AND MORE
**Please Note this will now be on Sunday 27th September**
De stuif na miotaseolaíochta é Bob Dylan. Croílár a chuid oibre an tóraíocht ar an bhfírinne agus ar an áilleacht. Thar aon amhránaí eile, is cuid lárnach dá ealaín é an t-aistear – tá sé sna seascaidí anois ach fós féin feictear agus cloistear ar an ardán é oíche i ndiaidh oíche le díograis a náireodh a chomhaimsearaigh. Is imram é a shaol is a chuid ealaíne in aon nasc amháin, oilithreacht a ligeann dó go leor leor bealaí a shiúl, an ceol traidisiúnta, an agóidíocht, na gormacha, an snagcheol, an rac leictreach, ceol tíre, reggae agus gaspal.
Caill é seo agus caillfidh tú do chiall.
Bob Dylan is legendary. At the heart of his work, there is a driven quest for truth and beauty. More than any other singer, journeying is central to his art – now in his sixties, he takes to the stage night after night with a zeal that puts his contemporaries to shame. His life and his art fuse in a unique imram that has seen him take countless musical detours – into traditional music, protest folk, blues, jazz, electric rock, country, reggae and gospel.
Under the stewardship of ace musician and producer Steve Cooney, The Dylan Project assembles a unique group of highly skilled singers and musicians with an instinctive understanding of the authentic grooves of the originals, reworked to fit exquisite Irish renderings by Gabriel Rosenstock, Colm Breathnach and Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill. The line-up features singers Liam Ó Maonlaí and Caoimhín Mac Giolla Catháin; and musicians Steve Cooney, Bill Shanley, Rod McVey, Martin Brunsden and Robert Harris.

LIAM SOLO NEWS - ALBUM AND SHOWS
Liam's new album 'To Be Touched' was released in Ireland on
Friday 28th November. It is now available to buy in all good record stores and from www.liamomaonlai.ie. The track 'On My Mind' from the album is up on www.myspace.com/liamomaonlaimusic from Monday.

PRESS RELEASE:
'To Be Touched' is the stunning new solo album from Liam Ó Maonlaí. It is a deep, rich, soulful collection of new piano-accompanied compositions. Recorded in Prague last July with the
companionship and help of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, and funded by concerts the three of them performed there, 'To Be Touched' features Marketa on guest vocals along with the steady
hand of Martin Brunsden on double bass.
Liam went into the studio with just three of the songs already written, the rest were born in the studio environment and continue to grow on this album.
From the light ease of 'Worry Not' and the intimacy of title track 'To Be Touched' the album exudes an atmosphere of calm and strength.
'To Be Touched' reintroduces Liam Ó Maonlaí as a songwriter of relevance and captures beautifully one of Ireland's greatest singers. Liam Ó Maonlaí has been inpsired by the great singers of the
American plains. By the dance and ceremonial songs of the first nations of the continent of turtle island. By the pioneering folk, soul and blues musicians of modern USA. By the Arabic and Moorish
expressions of divine love. By the pure tones of the Aboriginal people of Australia and by th egentle powerful music of West Papua. He made his career with rock and roll/soul music band Hothouse Flowers, this established his name as a singer of note in the soul/blues style. 'To Be Touched' is a birthing of his
influences through the medium of song. He uses his first
instrument the piano as a landscape for the wandering voice. Here are songs made of desire to open the heart and to share deep feelings.

One of the shows filmed is available for purchase 'Live at the Ave: Hothouse
Flowers with Colin Devlin' from the shop soon. A documentary entitled 'Scenes
From A Tour' was shown at festivals and to fans in the US. Would you like to

'An intimate look at independent Irish band Hothouse Flowers and friend/tour-mate
Colin Devlin as they careen around the States on tour. A passionate portrait
comprised of stellar performances, offstage antics, true fans and friends, personal
reflections, and the cast of characters that inhabit the Flowers' tour bus.
It premiered at the Sound Unseen Festival in Minneapolis, MN and played at the
Boston Irish Film Festival, October, 2004. The clip viewable on this website
is a compilation from the feature length documentary. It's primarily the backstage
bits & stories that give you a sense of these fantastic artists and some of
their amazing fans.'
Not only that but you can also have a taster of the gig at The Avenue with Colin
Devlin singing 'There Is A Light' accompanied by Hothouse Flowers and Hothouse
Flowers playing one of their own from 'Live At The Avenue'. Please check out
other artists that Brighid Films have worked with.
A TRIBUTE TO FRANK MURRAY
Recently a legendary figure passed on from the Flowers' family - Frank Murray
of White Stallion Roadies. Frank drove, roadied, sorted, listened, lugged and
talked his way (oh did he talk!) all over the place for the band and many other
artists. He was an all round good guy and would do his utmost to help you whenever
he could even if it meant putting something else off. You may have seen him
at the side of the stage or even in front bopping away or even leading the singing.
We'd like to use the tribute read at Frank's funeral which is so fitting of
the man. Frank - we'll miss you more than words can say. Keep on truckin' up
there!
FRANK MURRAY WHITE STALLION ROADIES 1963 - 2007 R.I.P.
Ireland is not a big country, but it often feels that way when driving from
A to B. Cork to Donegal is a long haul. But when you’ve got to get back to Dublin
then return to Donegal again only to set off for Galway and then Belfast, via
Limerick, not get stabbed, fill up with diesel, do a quick pickup in the Burlington,
catch a few hours kip and a kebab, and start all over again on a similar but
different route, the country can seem enormous. This was a typical working rota
for Frank. If you think you work long hours or spend too much time in the car
then check out the lot of a driver in the entertainment business. And it’s all
done against the clock because the show must go on.
To anyone involved in theatre, corporate events & rock n roll - or the “Music
business” as it likes to be called now, Frank was WHITE STALLION, a larger than
life creature of boundless energy and strength, with an arsenal of stories to
be shared in the few minutes between arriving to load and heading off to his
next port of call. He was like the old stagecoach system, bringing people together
through his news bulletins from round the land. He made Ireland a smaller and
a closer place.
You will have met him delivering and collecting scaffolding, sets, sound and
lights; backline, bags and bodies (musicians) at all hours of the day or night,
around Ireland and beyond.
Whether in his van or bus, for the past 20 years Frankie was forever moving
people and stuff from place to place, and ALWAYS with a smile. Unlike many drivers
he also took great care in how the equipment was packed. He loved everybody
and everything he touched.
Frank was well known at Dublin airport, and at Ireland's top hotels where he
used to collect and deliver luggage and instruments for some of the world’s
great artistes. Right now he is probably schmoozing with Frank Sinatra sharing
stories about The Spice Girls or Springsteen. Cos he handled their bags among
many, and was therefore in his own way a part of their performances. He treated
everyone as equal, whether a rock star, royalty, or just a kid from Cork or
Cork Street. He is also one of the few people in Ireland who can claim to have
had tea with Lady Di.
Linguistically, Frank was second to none. He thought and spoke so quickly that
everything was a “WHATCHAMACALLIT” as he thought about what it was he actually
wanted to tell you. A further contribution to the English language was made
when he turned the noun, GIG into a verb. “WE RIG IT, YOU GIG IT” was the White
Stallion motto, and he did. He loved to get stuck into setting up and striking
a show, he was not simply “The Driver”.
Like many of you I have spent more than a few hours being driven up & down the
roads of Ireland by Frank. Anyone who has shared his cab will tell you the experience
was mostly one of LISTENING, and not necessarily to the stereo. There are only
so many ways to say “Shut up Frank, I’m trying to sleep”. But he had a way of
getting round you. He simply never stopped talking, but I WISH HE WOULD NOW.
He had to stay awake, and you always trusted him to get you home.
Frank was forever a dreamer; always planning a better way, a better service.
Though his life was always about service, he dreamed of getting rich too and
hitting the magic formula. God knows he worked hard enough. And as I’ve been
thinking of what do you say about Frank, I realise he reminds me of DEL BOY
from Only Fools and Horses (He was a stallion after all); in that he worked
his heart out, charmed everyone and devised several schemes but was thwarted
at many turns. For example, he decided on a fabulous purple colour scheme for
his vehicles only to be upstaged by Greenstar waste management in a matter of
months and had to re-paint them all again so as not to be mistaken for someone
in the rubbish game.
Frank was someone who wanted to please and help everybody. He once got out of
bed at 4am to deliver a spanner to a mate who was broken down in Athy. He was
just that kind of guy.
He would take on more than he could handle. Not out of greed but because he
would never let you down. As a result he would overstretch himself and would
have to create excuses and porky pies for being behind schedule. Some were true,
such as CLIENT: “where are you?” FRANK: “There’s a badger in my gearbox!” Less
true was the time he told a client that he couldn’t do a last minute run because
he was in Cork, only to drive round a corner in Finglas and meet the same client
5 mins later, with a wave. Hard to miss as his vehicles were, he always spotted
you on the road too and he was NEVER afraid to use his horn.
He had the craziest schedule imaginable and then when things were quiet, he
would try to get paid. And even then he had difficulty charging appropriately.
His wife, Catherine is a lady with speech and hearing difficulties. Frank was
fluent in sign language and put a lot of his free time into working with kids
with speech and learning difficulties. After a fund raising gig for Barretstown
Castle one night, he tried to teach me the basics of signing in Macs pub in
Ballymore Eustace. And then when he discovered what the gig was for he refused
to invoice me.
But most of all, like Del Boy, Frank was a family man. A Murray from Cork St.
Inner city dubs to the core. Proud, and as tight as it gets. He would often
have one or other of his parents, a niece or nephew in the cab on a job with
him. He had a job a few years ago at the British Embassy and with both his mam
and dad in the cab he parked outside, rolled down the windows and played “A
Nation Once Again” on his stereo.
His family have been at his bedside every day for 4 weeks and they are truly
incredible. It has been an honour to get to know them better over the past month.
Firstly in hope and lately to share their despair as the Big Man slipped downhill
but refused to stop clinging on. From them Frank inherited his humour, compassion
and work ethic.
It was bucketing rain yesterday at the funeral home, but I swear that the minute
the lid was put on Frank’s coffin, the sun came out. His Mam & Dad will carry
on with our help, and we WILL help them. Frank has no more deadlines to meet.
The road is a quieter and lonelier place. Look out for him as you drive around.
The Stallion is free!

different URL! (To match the forthcoming www.prenupmusic.com)
Wishing everyone a fabulous Christmas and a great 2007!
xx Fiachna
- - - - -
Fiachna and Dave's new project with Cáit O Riordan of The Pogues has lift off!
The trio are named 'Prenup' and you can hear three amazing and exclusive tracks
from their forthcoming album 'Hell To Pay' at their MySpace page www.myspace.com/prenupmusic
'What happens when members of two of the greatest bands in Irish rock history
get together? Something incredible… Back from their lengthy US tour, Fiachna
O Braonain and Dave Clarke of the Hothouse Flowers met up with Cáit O Riordan
of the Pogues, and the result is.. Prenup. The first session happened by accident,
jamming together at a party in a castle in the foothills of Ireland’s spectacular
Wicklow Mountains, it was one of those legendary moments in music that happen
by chance, and that no one present will ever forget. Classy guitar, insistent
bass and drums, gritty vocals and songs written by rockers who know what they’re
doing… "talkin’ about a foolish love", Prenup started recording. Making noise
in a disused office block in Dublin’s famous Temple Bar, followed by two days
at Elektra Studios, Prenup laid down their first tracks, guerrilla-style, then
got on the road. Gigging in the wild West of Ireland, Prenup rocked the house
wherever they went and are now back in the studio to put the finishing touches
to their debut album "Hell to Pay". It’s due for release in 2007 and those in
the know can’t wait...'

'Hiya Everyone,
Just to let you know I was in Connemara recently filming for two days for a
programme on TG4 called 'Mo Laethanta Saoire' .. this is Irish for 'My Holidays'.
I was asked to do a programme about where I used to go on holidays and so I
took them to the West for a few days. We spoke to Tomas Mac Eoin (as featured

singer and storyteller!), Sean Ban Breathnach (Radio na Gaeltachta DJ who first
recorded the Flowers in Irish for radio and crashed the Flowers' first 'Top
Of The Pops' appearance!) and Edward Delaney (sculptor, friend and pool playing
partner from teenage days). We also filmed a traditional session in the local
bar... a bunch of local musicians and myself. I also sang a sean nos song I
got from my great uncle Vail O Flathartaigh who was from the area. It is due
to be aired on the 28th June on TG4... Good vibes for your holidays, too!

LIAM ON TG4!
'Abair Amhràn, the TG4 Irish music series, launches in Dublin
on Tuesday the 29th of March. A powerful new series of Abair Amhràn is
launched at the Morgan Hotel, Fleet Street on Tuesday, the 29th of March with
many of the performers present on the night.
Abair Amhràn is a musical journey around Ireland in the company of some
of our best know and loved performers. Featuring stunning visual imagery from
Dun Aonghus to Gugan Barra, the series includes songs old and new that have
resonated down through the centuries and passed from generation to generation.
Such distinguished performers as Liam O'Maonlai, Brian Kennedy, Anuna and Liam
Clancy share their common love of song, singing and chat, performing such well-loved
traditional songs as "Mairin de Barra", "Eamonn a Chnoic",
"Skibereen" and "An Sean Bhean Bhocht".
Interspersed with performances of these songs, we hear lively stories and chat
about their significance and what they mean to our performers. The series is
a lively mix of beautiful landscapes shot in modern eclectic style and haunting
musical performances that linger long after they have been heard.
The first series of Abair Amhràn airs on TG4 at 10pm on TG4.'

VOTE FOR THE BEST SONG IN 25 YEARS OF IRISH MUSIC ON TODAY FM
'The British public are currently voting on the Best British song of
the last 25 years and the short list of 25 has turned up a few surprises, in
my opinion, such as Will Young and Sting! I thought that was slightly dodgy,
so why not put it to the Irish to decide on the Best Irish song of the last
25 years? Maybe you think the accolade should belong to U2 for 'One' or Christy
Moore's 'Ride On' or Paddy Casey's 'Saints and Sinners'...Whoever you think
has put out THE BEST song of the last 25 years, we at the Ian Dempsey Breakfast
Show want to know. Cast your vote today. I will be announcing the top runners
during the Breakfast Show between 7 and 9am weekdays, and the overall winner
on February 9th. So VOTE NOW! When you vote you will go into a draw to win the
albums from which the top 20 songs hail! Log onto Todayfm.com to cast your vote!

BURNING MAN THROUGH IRISH EYES
From the Parabola Film Festival - Mythic Journeys Conference in Atlanta:
'A documentary short featuring a group of Irish men and women who brought their
ancient and soulful culture -- and their pub -- to the middle of Nevada's Black
Rock Desert for a Burning Man gathering in August 2003. The film shares some
inspiring music from Hothouse Flowers as the pub gifts away beer and attemptsto
change a few perceptions. Sherece Lamke has produced and directed documentaries
that explore commonalities within diverse world culture as well as music documentaries
and videos. Karen Koski has spent many years in the
Detroit music community.'
The film will be shown on Friday 4th June 4, 7 - 8pm and Saturday 5th June,
11pm - Midnight in the Learning Center and includes discussion with the filmmakers
Karen Koski and Sherece Lamke. Running time for the film is 25/30 minutes. The
film features interviews with Liam and Fiachna as well as some performance time.
The film is in some fairly prestigious company: Ecologist/filmmaker Michael
Tobias, winner of the 2004 Parabola Focus Award features on the festival, too.
It is also the only film being screened twice AND the only film produced by
an all-female team. We wish them the best of luck! For more information on the

have been doing outstanding work for the cause on the Street Team so please
do say 'Hello and how can I help?' when you see them. If you would like to add
your own photos of Hothouse Flowers' gigs and gatherings follow the tutorial
in the guestbook here and/or go to the Fan Gallery here to
get the eye-candy! We've also cleaned it up a bit and added a section called
'Hands To Hold Together' for photos of fans before or after shows or at meetings
and gatherings. If you would like a new album created leave a message in the
guestbook in the Tutorial thread. Ta!
HOTHOUSE FLOWERS IN BELGIUM
The band return to Belgium to the Lokerse Feesten Festival on Thursday
5th August. Details in the gig listings. They return after playing there in
August, 2000. A review of that show is available from Paul Streefkerk in the
Gig History at www.hflive.co.uk
or on David's site here with some photos.
CLUAS ALL TIME IRISH CHARTS
Hothouse Flowers have been voted in at No.11 on Cluas' 'Top 50 Irish Acts Of All
Time'. Not bad considering the band are above The Chieftains, The Thrills,
Planxty, Damien Dempsey and Rory Gallagher! They also appear twice on Cluas'
'Top 50 Irish Albums Of
All Time' - 'Songs From The Rain' at No.24 (above Christy Moore's 'Ride
On' and The Pogues' 'Rum Sodomy and the Lash') and 'People' at No.38 (above
Ash's '1977', Rory Gallagher's 'Live in Europe' and Planxty's 'Planxty'.) Not
bad at all, eh? Visit www.cluas.com for all your Irish music
tastes, news and discussion.

NAVAN CHARITY GIG
Hothouse Flowers will be playing a charity gig at the Ardboyne Hotel,
Navan, on Wednesday 30th June. Here's how Irish music magazine 'Hot Press' have
reported details of the show:
'The tragic death of singer/songwriter and young mother Cleina Lynch in 1999
is proof that a seemingly futile death need not be in vain. Not only did Cleinas
donated organs save the lives of six people, her story also led to the inception
of a benefit gig which has been extremely successful since its first run in
2000. Every year, several popular Irish acts support the event and all proceeds
go to the National Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Centre at Beaumont Hospital
and the Irish Kidney Association and Citizens Information Centre. This year,
the Hothouse Flowers will be lending their name to the lineup, along with Bagatelle,
who celebrated their 25th anniversary last year and are still going strong.
Also playing on the night are Brian McFadden protégés Franklin,
Blues Up Front (complete with ex-Thin Lizzy drummer), Dublin-based Lotusland
and singer/songwriter Ray Murtagh. Tickets for this event always sell out fast
and those in the know return every year to experience these intimate gigs in
a special atmosphere. The gig takes place on June 30 in the Ardboyne Hotel,
Navan. Tickets go on sale Monday, June 21, and can be purchased either from
from the venue or Element Records (Navan).'
(Straight from the horse's mouth - well, Peter's - 'Its a charity acoustic show
lasting about 1 hour maybe less.')
